We stopped at the Lake Nakuru National Park on a trip from Kisumu to Nairobi, and stayed overnight inside the park at the Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge. I was last there in January 2013 and found the lake level much higher than in previous visits. However, we could still go on the roads closest to the lake. This time, however, the lake level is much higher, so much so that the original entrance is under water and the roads closest to the lake are under water.
The water levels in all of the Rift Valley lakes have risen since 2011, “to levels not seen in the last 50 years“. The “rise in the water level of the lakes in Rift Valley is due to effects of regional tectonics influenced by the movements of global earth’s plate tectonics“.
While we didn’t see any rhinos this time, we did see quite a number of animals, as seen in these photos. It will be interesting to see what will happen to the park over time. The lake levels aren’t predicted to drop anytime soon, and they aren’t predicted to rise much more either.
Salaaala! Tectonics & tectonics!!
